We’re glad you asked!
Here in Canada, when the colder weather hits, some of us tend to go into hibernation mode. I know that’s true for my kids and I. That’s also why I wasn’t surprised to read this stat in the UMPC Health Beat.
“In the winter, it is estimated that children burn only half as many calories as they do in the summer. Not only does the lack of exercise have a negative effect on their physical well-being, it also allows kids to store up a lot of unused energy.”
In fact, keeping your kids active during the cold months has been proven to improve their cognitive abilities, academic behaviour and overall attitude, according to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
Need a bit of coaxing to help you get your kids off the coach and into the pool? Here are two good reasons why fall is a great time to start swim lessons:
1. Get exercise without freezing your tush!
If your family doesn’t feel like skating, skiing or just going outside in general because of the cold, then swim lessons are a great way to get them off their devices and into some exercise without standing around in the cold. With a little bit of planning and organization, they can go from car to pool, to lesson, to car, to their bed all the while staying toasty warm!
2. Build your skill.
Beginning swim lessons in the fall gives you the optimal amount of time to gain confidence and learn vital swim skills before next summer. Giving students ample time to learn to swim allows them to learn at their own pace, which can result in a better understanding of the core skills of swimming. Before you know it, spring will be here and when your child hits the water for the first time, you will be amazed at the progress they’ve made!
If you need another reason to sign up or continue your swim classes through the fall and winter, when you commit to 3 months of swim lessons receive the 4th month at 50% off!
So, don’t wait until spring and sign up for lessons now!
